AREOLA RESTORATION FAQ
-
WHAT IS AREOLA RESTORATION?
AREOLA RESTORATION tattooing, also referred to as Paramedical tattooing is a specialized tattooing method most commonly known for restoring and enhancing the nipple and areola. This type of tattooing is widely known for creating realistic 3D restoration Nipple Tattoos on breast cancer survivors, post mastectomy surgery.
3D Restoration Nipple Tattoos are also a great option for anyone who has had top surgery (also known as gender reassignment surgery), nipple reconstruction or grafts, and breast surgery where the nipple has been lost or comprised.
These tattoos play a vital part in the healing journey for survivors and people in transition.
-
ARE THERE ANY RISKS INVOLVED WITH THIS KIND OF TATTOOING?
Areola tattooing is as safe as any other tattooing process. Choosing an artist who uses safe sterilization and hygiene practices keeps the risk of infection extremely low. Since the FDA does not regulate ink manufacturing, you’ll want to go to an educated artist who chooses companies with a good reputation.
Reactions to ink are very rare but can occur. The primary culprit is most commonly red ink. Since a nipple tattoo is done with colors that are similar to skin tone, there is little to no risk of a reaction.
We encourage you to check out online communities and forums run by women/people who’ve received nipple tattoos before to learn more about the experience. You may also email us to ask about specific concerns if they are not covered here.

-
HOW DO I KNOW IM READY FOR THIS PROCEDURE?
Physical readiness for an areola tattoo: A safe bet is to wait until the scars are no longer red, showing that they are no longer active and the scar tissue is now mature. Tattooing while the scars are red risks causing further damage to a growing cellular structure. We do require a note from your physician and a minimum of 4 months from the date of your final surgery and/or nipple reconstruction before we start tattooing.
emotional readiness is also an important part of this process making sure you are in the right state of body and mind is important to ensure you feel satisfied with your results. Happiness and self love begins on the inside.
-
WHAT IS THE HEALING PROCESS LIKE?
Healing times can vary. Typically, it takes 7-10 days. Slight scabbing or skin flaking will occur, but this is normal.
A thin coat of aftercare balm may be applied as needed during the healing process. A small non-stick pad or bandage will be required for the first few days to avoid sticking to clothing. Washing the area once a day and applying the ointment is normally all that is required to get a beautiful, well-healed result in 7-10 days.
-
HOW MANY SESSIONS ARE REQUIRED?
2-3 visits are typically required to complete the breast, nipple, and areola tattooing process. Even if scars are not visible, the breast tissue has been compromised, and we consider the entire area to be scarred. The area has been surgically altered, stretched, and replaced with skin from another area of the body or another substance, etc tattooing over scars is unpredictable so follow up appointments are necessary to ensure the best results.
-
DOES AREOLA RESTORATION HURT?
We do our best to make the areola tattooing process as painless as possible. Depending on your particular surgery, there may be some small amount of sensation, but it usually is minimal or mildly uncomfortable. In most cases, our clients do not feel any pain. Numbing sprays and creams are available upon request!
-
I HAD A NIPPLE RECONSTRUCTION… CAN I STILL GET A NIPPLE TATTOO?
Yes, although there are occasions when the pigment does not take well on the reconstructed nipple. The reconstructed nipple and the area around it can still be tattooed, but follow-up visits may be needed to ensure adequate pigment retention in that area.

WHAT IF I DONT LIKE THE DESIGN MY TATTOO ARTIST DREW UP?
As much as we do our best to avoid this happening sometimes things get lost in translation and result in design redraws.
if this occurs we will do our best to make changes to design at time of appointment wile still tattooing all in one session.
Sometimes time does not permit though and your artist may need to do a redraw and rebook your appointment for a later date. This doesn’t happen often but to avoid any miscommunications please give your artist as much detail as possible and email them with any questions or concerns you may have about design leading up to appointment!
(An extra fee may occur on top of price of appointment if tattoo redraw resulted in a reschedule due to client error to provide sufficient design details, changing design elements last minute, improper communication with artist or unrealistic expectations)
-
HOW MUCH WILL MY TATTOO COST?
Please reach out to your artist and ask for a general quote, every artist has their own pricing policies and minimum charge.
most likely no matter where you go you can expect to pay 100$ minimum regardless of size or design but please try not to base your decision on price but rather artist, style, studio and whether they are the right fit for the design you’re after!
remember cheap tattoos aren’t good and good tattoos aren’t cheap, it will cost you 5x the price of the original tattoo if you end up needing laser, or coverups in the future. don’t cheap out on something that you will have forever.
if you’re unsure about weather spending money on a good tattoo is worth it remember this is one of the very few things you can literally take to your grave, seems like a good investment to me<3
-
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO MY APPOINTMENT?
Depending on what area of your body youre getting tattooed!
legs: loose pants, shorts, skirts, dresses.
arms: Short sleeve, tank tops, loose tops.
Ribs/stomach/chest: loose crop tops. bra. zip open sweater.
Back: Zip open sweater worn backwards, loose shirt, backless shirt or bra.
remember no matter where you’re getting tattooed we never will be judging your body, clothes or appearance in anyway whatsoever<3 We will always be more focused on whether we can access the area properly, if you’re comfortable and if we are going to ruin your brand new white shirt!
Its more important you feel safe and you wear clothes that make you feel comfortable and don’t mind getting ink on!
-
CAN I SEE MY DESIGN BEFORE MY APPOINTMENT?
Most artists will NOT send over designs before appointments due to many reasons one being potential copyright
( like taking a design to another artist. ) we spend a lot of time on these designs and wouldn’t appreciate our time and effort being stolen and used else wear.
if you are very concerned about the artists ability to draw up your design, you can always ask for an in person consultation to go over things together or find a different artist, if you do not trust who you have picked, potentially they are not the right fit for you! Remember to rust your artist, most tattoo appointments factor in time to go over designs together to get placement size and details perfect before actually tattooing it!
-
CAN I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT WHAT I WANT?
yes but be mindful.
Please give your artist ample time to draw up your design,
most artists do not mind design changes as long as given atleast a weeks notice, you have to keep in mind a change in design can result in schedule disruptions if your new desired piece is smaller or bvigger thn your original idea, it may change how long you will need to b e booked out for!
artists always appreciate honesty and communication the more advance notice you can give us the better.
springing ideas on us last minute or at time of appointment can result in extra fees being added on to cost of appointment!
-
WHAT SHOULD I DO FOR AFTERCARE?
ALWAYS TALK TO YOUR ARTIST TO SEE WHAT THEY RECOMMEND.
here at pink ink we break it down into 4 simple steps.
1. Leave your second skin bandage on for the artists recommended length of time 4-6 days.
2. Remove Second skin bandage in the shower, allowing warm water to loosen the adhesive. Gently pull back a corner slowly peeling bandage off going with the direction of hair growth.
3. Carefully wash tattoo with anti-bacterial fragrance free soap and warm water to remove any build up/ adhesive residue.
4. Allow fresh tattoo to air dry then proceed to apply a thin layer of unscented lotion, twice a day for 2 weeks

DO TATTOOS HURT?
Yes! of course they do, most things in life hurt!
Sunburns, bee stings, waxing, cat scratches stubbing your toe.
chances are you have experienced worse pain in your life, but your artist should always understand the scariest part about getting a new tattoo is not the pain, its the n0t knowing. Unfortunately the only way to find out how they feel is to experience it for yourself, no matter what I or anyone else says, you must try it for yourself, do not allow others opinions scare you or talk you out of a certain tattoo. Instead talk to your artist and trust their personal judgement instead!
also remember these few things,
- if they were really that bad, would so many people have them?
-have you been through traumatic pain in the past?(bone breaks, child birth, sports accidents, bad burns?) do you really think it could be worse then that.
-Depending on style, artist, placement, size or detail, will change the answer to the degree in pain you may experience but I can assure its uncomfortable but not unbearable!

ITS MY FIRST TATTOO.... HOW CAN I PREPARE?
Theres no right or wrong way to get ready for a tattoo but here are some thihngs you can try and some things to avoid
Try:
-drinking lots of water 72 hours leading up to your appoinment, being deydrated can make the skin more difficult to tattoo and can weaken your pain tolerance
-getting a good 8 hours of rest before your tattoo appointment
-eating a carb/protein loaded meal a couple hours before your appointment to help your body’s blood sugar levels.
-washing/ gently exfoliating the area the night before to help remove any dead or dry skin.
Avoid:
-Drinking alcohol the night before, this can dehydrate you and also thin your blood making you more prone to bleeding and healing poorly.
-excessive caffeine intake, to much caffeine can make the body shaky, dehydrated and over stimulated which can result in a more difficult tattoo experience.
-Letting others have impact on your tattoo choice or decision making. this is your tattoo, just because your friend said that spot really hurt does not mean that will be true for you.
always speak to your artist if you have any questions or concerns<3
-
CAN MY ARTIST CUSTOM DESIGN MY TATTOO?
Of course! Sending your tattoo artist the right details about your desired tattoo is important!
specific information, reference imagery and similar material is the best way to get your ideas to translate properly to your artist, don’t forget to include more specific details if you are more particular in the outcome of your design! if
you are a bit more open to the artists interpretation of the piece make sure to let them know! we don’t mind either way just love open communication and honesty!
